Body psychotherapy

About body psychotherapy

A fundamental principle of body psychotherapy is that our emotional, mental and physical processes are always connected, and that our bodies hold our life stories. Using this type of psychotherapy, you can gain an understanding of the impact of certain life events and develop an awareness of how they may be influencing your body, thoughts, behaviour and choices in life.

What happens in a session?

The type of body psychotherapy I use is called biodynamic body psychotherapy. The word biodynamic refers to the energy of life that is present in each of us. This means that although talking is a large part of body psychotherapy, on the whole it is a more energised and embodied therapy than traditional psychotherapy. In each session, we might use a range of ways to explore your inner world including talking, imagery, breath work, grounding, body scanning, using your body spatially in a room rather than just talking about it and following bodily sensations associated with emotional feelings. Sessions may include biodynamic massage if appropriate and with your full consent.

Body psychotherapy can help you get in touch with every aspect of yourself, so you become closer to and more expressive of who you truly are. Once you feel this, your body can become more alive and responsive. With the right support, you can gain relief from a variety of conditions including emotional and physical pain, lethargy, IBS, migraine, depression, anxiety and stress.

All of my work uses trauma-sensitive ways of working and draws on current neuroscience research and practice. As a member of the Centre for Biodynamic Body Psychotherapy and UKCP, my practice is underpinned by appropriate training and closely supervised.
